Balancing Garage Door Springs Greater Toronto Area

Here is the test. Pull the opener’s release cord and lift the door halfway by hand. If it stays put, the springs are balanced. If it drops or flies up, your opener has been covering for them.

Why an unbalanced door costs more than a balance

The springs are meant to carry the door so the opener only has to nudge it. Out of balance, the opener carries the difference on every single cycle.

Springs lose tension gradually. It does not announce itself, because the opener quietly takes up the slack, so the first thing most people notice is that the door has got noisy or slow. What is actually happening is that the motor, the rollers and the tracks are absorbing a load they were never sized for.

Balancing resets the springs to the weight the door is actually carrying today, which is not always the weight it left the factory at. It is an adjustment, not a part, and it is the cheapest thing on this website.

  • The halfway test. Released and lifted by hand. A balanced door stays where you leave it.
  • Spring adjustment. Tension reset to what the door weighs now, both sides matched.
  • Friction check. Rollers and tracks, because a stiff door is not always a spring problem.
  • Opener force check. Re-set once the door is balanced, or the opener keeps overworking.
  • Honest answer. If your springs are at the end of their cycles we will tell you that instead.

It is maintenance, not a repair

Balancing is what stops the spring, the opener and the tracks all arriving at the end of their lives on the same weekend.

Torsion and extension

Both setups need balancing regardless of which one is over your door. Both get adjusted the same way: by hand, then tested by hand.
